Makarounes (a type of Cavatelli) 

This is a typical Greek pasta dish from the island of Karpathos. It looks like a cowry shell. The pasta dough is rolled out into long ropes that are cut off in small segments to form small morsels that are then flattened into disks with the thumb, the edge of a knife or a machine. These disks are rolled away, doubling up on themselves, to become Makarounes. Then they are boiled in salted water and served with fried onion and butter.
